  • Language Goals: Expand vocabulary and basic conversation skills, introduce pinyin as a tool for reading, and begin writing simple characters.
  • Project-Based Learning: Incorporate thematic projects that align with language goals, such as creating a simple storybook, puppet show, or group presentation in Chinese. This engages students’ creativity and deepens their understanding of sentence structures.
  • Reading Simple Stories Independently: Introduce short passages, stories, or dialogues for students to read on their own or in groups. Focus on recognizing high-frequency characters.
  • Explicit Grammar Instruction: Teach basic sentence structures explicitly, such as subject-verb-object and question forms. Use sentence-building exercises to reinforce these structures.
  • Games for Character Recognition: Introduce games like “Character Bingo” or “Matching” to help students recognize and recall more complex characters.
