At Chia Chinese, we believe that children learn language best when they use it with purpose. Vocabulary lists and textbooks are important—but real confidence grows when students step into authentic situations and communicate in Chinese in the real world.
That’s why experiential learning is a core part of our program. From local grocery store simulations to New Year Temple Fair and even our Asian summer travel experiences, we intentionally design learning pathways that connect classroom instruction to meaningful real-life use.
Today, I’d love to show you what that looks like in action.
From Classroom to Community: Our Grocery Store Learning Pathway
One of our favorite experiential units is built around a familiar theme: the grocery store.
What begins as vocabulary learning in the classroom gradually develops into full real-world interaction.
🌟 Scenario 1: Finding Items & Checking Prices
We begin with a “Find It!” challenge that builds vocabulary, reading skills, and excitement.
Step 1: Vocabulary Building
Review words:
水果 (fruit)
New words:
肉, 猪肉, 鸡肉, 牛肉, 虾, 鱼, 鸡蛋, 牛奶
Character writing practice:
肉,鱼,奶,我,找
Students practice recognizing, saying, and writing these words in developmentally appropriate ways.
Interactive Activities
Activity 1: Point and Identify (Whole Group)
The teacher says a word on the big screen.
Students point to the correct image.
Activity 2: Paper Hunt (Individual Practice)
Each child receives a printed sheet filled with grocery items.
The teacher says:
“找到牛奶!”
Students circle the correct item.
Activity 3: Around-the-Classroom Search
We turn the classroom into a mini market!
Printed vocabulary cards are placed around the room.
Students walk around and announce:
“我找到了牛奶!”
“我找到了鱼!”
This movement-based activity reinforces listening and speaking in a joyful, active way.
Adding Prices
Once students “find” items, we introduce pricing.
New vocabulary:
打折 (on sale)
Character writing:
刀 (as in “dollar”)
Students practice writing simple prices and asking:
“一共多少钱?”
They record prices after locating items—connecting numbers with real purchasing language.
🌟 Scenario 2: Checkout Interaction
Next, students practice a realistic checkout dialogue.
Dialogue Example (Intermediate Level)
A: 你好。我要付钱。
B: 好的。你要袋子吗?
A: 我要一个袋子。一共多少钱?
B: 10刀。
A: 给你!谢谢!再见!
Students rotate roles as customer and cashier. We add play money, reusable bags, and receipts to make it feel authentic.
For younger or beginner learners, the sentences are shorter:
“多少钱?”
“给你。”
“谢谢。”
For more advanced students, we add:
- Multiple items
- Calculating totals
- Discussing discounts
- Making comparisons
🌟 Scenario 3: Ordering Food
After shopping comes ordering!
We introduce food vocabulary:
蛋糕 (草莓蛋糕 / 巧克力蛋糕 / 纸杯蛋糕)
包子 (肉包子 / 菜包子)
肉串
量词 (一块,一串,一个)
Intermediate Dialogue
A: 你好,我要一块草莓蛋糕。
B: 好的,给你。
A: 一共多少钱?
B: 5刀。
A: 给你!谢谢!再见!
Advanced learners might:
- Order milk tea
- Choose cup sizes (小杯,中杯,大杯)
- Add toppings
- Customize sweetness levels
This layered approach allows every child to succeed while continuing to grow.
Bringing It Into the Real World
After weeks of preparation, we extend learning beyond the classroom.
🏮 Chinese New Year Temple Fair
During our Spring Festival celebration:
- Students rotate through cultural activity stations.
- We invite local Chinese food vendors.
- Children order food using the exact language practiced in class.
They don’t just memorize “我要一个包子.”
They actually use it.
Language becomes real.
🏙️ Chinatown Day Trip
Our Chinatown day trip provides even deeper immersion.
Students:
- Read store signs
- Identify familiar characters
- Order snacks
- Practice polite greetings
- Observe cultural details
Parents often tell us:
“My child started pointing at characters everywhere!”
That’s when we know learning has moved from lesson to life.
✈️ Asian Summer Trip
For older students, our Asian Summer Trip offers a more immersive experience.
Students:
- Volunteer
- Visit local markets
- Navigate public spaces
- Use Mandarin in daily interactions
By this stage, language is no longer an activity—it becomes a tool for independence.
Why Parents See the Difference
Experiential learning helps children:
✔ Build real communicative confidence
✔ Retain vocabulary longer
✔ Develop cultural understanding
✔ Strengthen independence
✔ Feel proud using Chinese outside the classroom
Because learning is scaffolded step-by-step, children feel prepared—not overwhelmed—when they encounter real-world situations.
Growing With Your Child
One of the strengths of our program at Chia Chinese is differentiation.
- Beginners focus on key vocabulary and short phrases.
- Intermediate students build full conversations.
- Advanced learners handle customization, negotiation, and detailed interaction.
The themes may stay consistent—but the depth of language grows with your child.
At Chia Chinese, we don’t just teach Chinese.
We design experiences where children live it, use it, and gain the confidence to carry it into the real world.
If you’d like to learn more about our experiential programs—including our Chinatown Day Trips and Asian Summer Travel opportunities—we’d love to connect with you.
Because when children experience language, they remember it. And when they remember it, they use it.
